Shining a Light on . . . Melanie Truitt

08 Dec, 2021

A light in the lives of everyone around her, Melanie Truitt has a calm nature that spills out into her PK2 classroom. A teacher since 1992, “Ms. Melanie” has been a member of our Early Childhood Center faculty at SAA-SDS for six years. Please take a minute to get to know Ms. Melanie a little better!

Why did you want to become a teacher?

Growing up I always had a love for children. It was all of those babysitting jobs that opened my eyes to the possibilities of early childhood education.

What do you enjoy about teaching PK2?

PK2 is such a fun age group to work with! They are like little grown-ups with their own unique personalities--that change at a drop of a dime. They are the most honest people you will ever meet. They are very curious, and they love to explore and try new things. There is never a dull moment!

What are some ways you bring lessons to life?

Everything we do involves hands-on learning. Whether it is through games, center activities, or arts and crafts.

What do you hope to accomplish in your job?

I hope to provide a positive environment and experiences that capture the joy of childhood. I want to nurture each child's individual growth and development and pave the way for their success in school and in life.

What do you enjoy most about your job/what are your favorite parts of your job?

I enjoy our circle time in the morning and watching them be creative in our art projects, but my favorite part is just being silly with the kids! I love their laughter!

What makes the St. Agnes-St. Dominic ECC experience unique?

The teaching team! Each of the ladies in the ECC has special talents and when they're all put together, we have one amazing team. THE ECC ROCKS! It is a wonderful group of ladies that support each other at work and outside of work.

Which of the Dominican Pillars-study, prayer, community, service-is supported most by your role here or means the most to you?

Community is so important in the ECC. I love to help whenever needed and be a support system for my parents. Prayer is also very important to me and a part of our day every day. My favorite scripture verse is Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me.”

What are you most grateful for?

I am most grateful for my family and friends. They have always been a great support system for me.

What are your hobbies/interests outside of the classroom?

Outside of work I enjoy traveling. Also, I am a Chicago Style Stepper!  I love to dance and listen to music.  I watch a lot of HGTV-- I love to decorate and try some DIYs. I have a love for elephants (I have quite the collection!)
