Meet Our Upper School SGA President-Ava Maples

An active member of the SAA Fine Arts Department, you may have seen some of her artwork or on-stage performances, but Ava Maples’ heart lies in building relationships with people and being an inclusive leader.

Take a minute to learn a little more about Ava and her goals as 2025-2026 SGA President.

How long have you been a student at St. Agnes?

I have been a student at St. Agnes for 5 years. I started in 7th grade, but I was virtual until the 4th quarter because of COVID.

What is your favorite thing about SAA?

My favorite thing about St. Agnes is the relationships I’ve made, whether it be with other seniors, across the grades, or with teachers. I love walking down the halls and saying “hi” to someone new or exchanging a sweet smile with someone I know.

Which class has been your favorite?

My favorite class has been any art class I’ve taken. Art has always been a creative outlet for me, and I was able to really explore that in Art 1 freshman year. When I took Art 2, I was able to learn the basics and other mediums, besides pencil and paint. Art is a class that continues to challenge me, while also being a class I enjoy.

What is your favorite St. Agnes tradition and why

My favorite St. Agnes tradition is in the theater. A few minutes before show night, all the seniors get on a table in the art room and sing “Mississippi Mud.” This bittersweet tradition is a celebration of the seniors' hard work and dedication to the theater, while also acknowledging that this is their last show. Ever since my first St. Agnes show, I have imagined myself as a senior on those tables, so it’s the thing I’m most excited for.

Why did you decide to participate in Student Government?

I knew after watching my first assembly that I wanted to pursue Student Government or some sort of leadership position. After running for Spirit Week Coordinator and losing, I decided to try SGA. The Leadership Retreat was also confirmation that SGA was something I wanted to do.

What does it mean to you to have the support of your peers

Having a support system is my motivation during the school year. When I come to school, I feel confident knowing I'm surrounded by people who have my back.

What are your goals for the year as SGA president?

My goals this year as SGA president are about encouraging a positive and inclusive school culture. In assembly, I want to make sure everyone feels welcome and excited about this week's assembly. In meetings, I want to make sure everyone is heard and feels comfortable sharing their opinions and ideas.

What has St. Agnes taught you about leadership?

St. Agnes has taught me that a leader is not the stereotypical loud, extravert. Everyone has their own strengths that enable them to be a leader.

What advice would you give a freshman?

I would advise a freshman to get involved. Join clubs that interest you, do extracurriculars, or run for an office! Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there because you never know what could happen!

What other activities are you involved in at SAA?

I am involved in theater, choir, and a few clubs, like the Weather Club and Black Student Union.

What are you involved in outside of school?

Outside of school, I’m a part of my church’s youth group, and I am also on the baking and birthday committee. I’m a Bridge Builder, and I love spending time with my family and friends.
