Eighth grade student Andrew Mayo has been a member of the St. Dominic School community since Pre-Kindergarten. He is currently serving his fellow Suns as SDS Lower School Student Government Association President. Take a minute to get to know Andrew and learn about his experience at SDS.

Why did you decide to run for SGA President?

I ran for SGA president because I felt that it was a good leadership opportunity. I had important input that could help the student body, so I decided to put myself out there. It was definitely out of my comfort zone, but I am so glad I have had this opportunity.

What have you learned about leadership this year serving as SGA President?

I have learned so much from Student Government. My leadership skills have been strengthened as SGA President. This role has also made me open to new ideas and more comfortable in hard and stressful situations. This job has meant a lot to me, and I value that I have had this experience.

You will be graduating in a few months. As you reflect on your years at SDS, what are some of your favorite memories?

I have had many fantastic memories at this school. Field Days and football games are some of my favorites, but above all, the people are probably going to be the most memorable. The people at SDS are really what makes it such a special school.

What has been your favorite class or teacher?

One of my favorite teachers I have had at SDS is Mrs. Garibaldi. She taught me in 5th grade, but she continues to help me academically and spiritually. She is such a kind human and always puts her students first.

What have you liked about attending an all-boys school?

My favorite thing about attending an all-boys school is the brotherhood. At SDS, I know I have a multitude of people to rely on whether that is my peers or my teachers. St. Dominic isn’t just a school community, but also a family. I have made so many relationships that I hold dear and that will last a lifetime. I am saddened to be leaving such an amazing place, but I know I have so much more to experience thanks to SDS. It means so much to me that I have been able to attend such an astounding school.

Describe the Junior High experience at SDS.

Junior High has been some of my favorite years at SDS. I enjoy having more freedom and having different teachers and classes. Another aspect I like is going to school with girls these two years. It definitely is different, but it is a good way to make new friends since I will be going to CBHS next year with all boys.

How do you think St. Dominic has prepared you for high school?

St. Dominic has benefited me in so many ways. Academically, I have had amazing teachers that I have learned so much from. Also, my peers have taught me in many ways. SDS has taught me to be true to myself and especially God. I believe that this key advice will help me soar in my upcoming years.

Do you think you will pursue leadership roles in high school?

I hope to put myself out there and continue leadership roles as I go on to high school and even after high school. My middle school roles have become a basis for my upcoming leadership roles.

What do you like to do outside of school?

I enjoy spending time with my family and friends in my free time. I like to watch and play sports also. My favorite sport to watch is probably college football.
