Painting by Local Artist Celebrates Community of Boys at St. Dominic

21 Oct, 2019

Brotherhood Week at St. Dominic School got off to a wonderful start this morning when local artist, Danny Broadway, stopped by and unveiled his latest work of art, which celebrates boys.

His beautiful painting entitled, “Looking for the Game” is representative of the community of boys at St. Dominic School and celebrates boyhood as  young boys look for adventure in their lives.

Mr. Broadway talked with the students about the subject of the painting. He told them how he was inspired by the young men of St. Dominic School as he visited with them and watched them grow and learn how to navigate today's world. He encouraged our boys to be reminded of community when interacting with others, always looking for ways to include everyone.

The painting, which is an acrylic on canvas, will hang in the SDS hallway outside the front office. Mr. Broadway had previously visited with the students during September sharing stories about his life as an artist, his inspiration, and his message to all aspiring artists.

Mr. Broadway was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and grew up commuting between there and Memphis. Some of his earliest memories are of drawing not only on paper, but on furniture and clothes; a practice which did not go over well with his mother and grandmother. It wasn’t until the seventh grade, when his art teacher pulled him aside and told him he had artistic talent that Danny had the idea he could actually make art.

His interest in art continued to grow throughout high school, and Mr. Broadway cites his high school art teacher, Miss Poole, as a big influence in his decision to pursue art. He attended the University of Memphis and received a degree in Fine Art, and Memphis remains his home.

Inspired by the both the past and current world around him, his art portrays movement, light and emotion in colorful images of people, nature and activities. With a love of experimentation, he uses different types of mediums and imagery to transform an image in his mind to a work that connects with the viewer’s soul.
