2025 St. Dominic Football Season Preview

20 Aug, 2025
Our St. Dominic Suns kick off the 2025 football season this Thursday, August 21, poised for a season of growth and success! The 5/6 team takes on Christ Methodist at 5:30 p.m. at CBHS followed by the 7/8 team vs. Lausanne at 7:00 p.m.
As the season begins, the focus across the program remains on steady progress, shared responsibility, and fostering a competitive spirit that prepares the boys for success. The program is experiencing growth - participation has increased by 20% compared to last year. A larger team roster creates a more robust experience for our student athletes giving more boys the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the game and develop both as athletes and as young men. As coaches emphasize the fundamentals of football—blocking, tackling, and understanding the flow of the game—they are also teaching teamwork and discipline.
“Our goal is to help these boys develop the skills and habits that will serve them well on and off the field,” said Coach Hamlet. “We start with the building blocks of the sport early on and progress to the concepts that will prepare them for high school.”
7/8 Team Outlook
The 7th and 8th grade Suns look to build on a strong performance from last season as they return a solid core of experienced players to anchor the team. Eighth graders Webb Elkington, Phillip King, Jake Roberson, and Jack Slattery bring valuable game experience, leadership, and consistency to the roster. They are joined by newcomer MJ Dowdy whose athleticism has already made an impression during preseason practices. Together, this group will help set the tone for the season—both in performance and in serving as an example for younger players.
5/6 Team Outlook
The 5th and 6th grade team also features a group of returning players who are continuing to grow in their understanding of the game and their ability to execute on the field. Sixth graders Andrew Tucker, Jack Tucker, Cash Tidwell, and Heinz Barksdale have all made noticeable strides since last season, showing improved skills and a highly competitive drive. They are joined by newcomer Max Blaylock, whose quick adaptation and eagerness to learn have been welcome additions to the squad. This team’s focus will be on building a strong foundation that will serve them well in future seasons.
Our Suns are growing in their skills and confidence while learning how to compete with purpose and determination. Come cheer on our Suns this season!
