Meet A’ja Jolliff, SAA Senior and President of the Black Student Union

Described by one of her teachers as “sunshine” due to her positive outlook and contagious joy, SAA senior A’ja Jolliff is a shining Star pursuing her passions. From the stage to the softball field, to running her own photography business, she is enjoying her last few months of high school and busily planning for her future. Take a minute to get to know A'ja a little better!

When did you join the St. Agnes community?

I started school at St. Agnes in the 9th grade. I previously attended Immaculate Conception Cathedral School.

Why did you want to be the Black Student Union (BSU) president?

I wanted to be BSU president to be a leader in my school community, to promote inclusion and diversity, and to inspire others. I also hope to be a role model to the younger students.

BSU does a great job leading the students in celebrating Black History month. What does the BSU have planned for this year’s celebration?

BSU has a lot of fun things planned for Black History Month. Our theme for Black History Month is “Stomp the Yard”.  We will focus on the aspects of college life, hair, battle of the bands, and so much more. We are also planning a surprise segment on Memphis and how the city fits into Black History.

What class has been your favorite so far, and why?

My favorite class was Family Consumer Science! I got to learn so many new things such as cooking, sewing, and crocheting. If I had not taken family consumer science, I would have not learned all those things and would not have these new interests and hobbies.

Do you have a favorite SAA tradition or event?

My favorite SAA tradition is Spirit Week It is a great time to bond with my class, perform a skit and sing so many fun songs. It's bittersweet because this is my last Spirit Week. I hope we win and have lots of fun!

What other activities are you involved in?

I have been involved in the SAA Theatre Department for the past four years, I am the captain of my liturgical dance team, a member of the SAA softball team, the Co-President of the Girl Up Club, and a member of the Student Athletic Council.

What are your hobbies or things you are passionate about?

Besides my many campus activities, I have a photography business. I've had my business for over three years now. It started off as a passion and became a business, and I hope to continue exploring my talent as I go off to college.

What are you hoping to do after graduation?

After graduation I hope to attend Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. I want to major in Criminal Justice/Pre-Law. I would love to one day be a civil rights attorney or have a career as an FBI special agent.
