I had the chance to sit in on a practice this week in preparation for the first SAA Upper School Theatre Department performance of the year-Beehive-the 60’s Musical. It's an all-girls show that celebrates the wonderful female voices of the 1960’s. This was a time in history where women were getting the opportunity to say what they really wanted to say. The musical has some of the greatest music hits of the time from artists such as Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Janis Joplin. There's really a little bit of everything for anyone!

Mrs. Ann Neal, SAA Theatre Director states, “I chose this show because of its complexity in the singing and dancing.” The cast is very talented, and she knew that they would be able to pull it off.

Mrs. Neal pointed out that the actresses hardly get a break during the show due to being on stage, harmonizing with each other. There are multiple points where the girls get off the stage and join the audience, and then have to get back to their mark. This just shows the impressive technique that these ladies have.

Behind the scenes, all the actresses expressed to me their excitement at getting the opportunity to explore the era of the 1960s and the musical style of that period. Most of them had never even heard these songs before they joined the cast of this play. Senior cast member Ivy Gates expressed, “This cast is awesome and very welcoming towards everyone,” showing the community that these girls have created during their rehearsals.

The talent that I have witnessed this week is spectacular. Some of the actresses you may have seen in past productions before, but there are a couple who will be making their debut during this performance. There is astonishing choreography and breathtaking singing. You will enjoy watching and singing along!

So, clear your schedule and come watch Beehive on the 19th, 20th, and 21st at 7 p.m. in the Hook Theatre. It's a nostalgic show with songs that will be stuck in your head for the rest of the week!
