Taking Learning on the Road

Though sometimes our students may see it as a “day off” from school, SAA-SDS educators know that a field trip is a powerful learning tool, and one of the many factors that contribute to a well-rounded education. They embrace opportunities to take learning on the road-from Kindergarten’s annual Day in the Woods to the recent AP Environmental Science visit to test water quality at Shelby Farms.

Field trips serve many purposes for our students both academically and social-emotionally. They connect classroom learning to the real world, with a hands-on approach that helps students learn and retain material. Also, these outings foster peer bonding and community building, promoting the sisterhood and brotherhood we cherish at our school.

April was a busy month for many classes as they took advantage of the good weather and of all the explorable areas our city has to offer, as well as some outside of our city. Recent trips included:

SAA Upper School Aviation Class visit with corporate pilots at FedEx

SAA & SDS 8^th grade visit to Washington, D.C.

SDS grades K-6 Brotherhood Bowling outing

SDS 3^rd grade Egyptology Museum

SD6 6^th grade Redbirds outing

SAA 6^th grade visit to the Dixon Museum & Gardens

SDS 5^th Grade visit to the Agricenter

SAA & SDS 4^th grade trip to Nashville

There are a few more outings planned as we close out the school year: the SAA & SDS grades 4-8 choir trip to Ave Maria, the SDS 3^rd grade trip to Muddy’s, and the SAA grades K-6 Sisterhood trip to the Memphis Zoo.

Chances are, even as an adult, you remember a field trip from your youth. If you grew up in Memphis it is probably a visit to the Memphis Zoo, Chucalissa, or Victorian Village. We hope these off-campus adventures give our students the same opportunity to learn while creating lifelong memories.
