Highlighting Black History at SAA

Highlighting Black History at SAA

Members of the 2025-2026 Black Student Union

11 Feb, 2026

Members of the SAA Black Student Union kicked off the Black History Month celebration with an assembly presentation entitled Highlighting Black History at SAA, a theme chosen to coincide with the school’s 175thAnniversary.

We spoke with BSU Co-Presidents Angel Chatman and Ava Maples and Vice-President Morgan Paige about their informative presentation and what the past, present, and future of SAA means to them. This is what they shared with us:

How did you decide on your Black History Month theme?

St. Agnes is celebrating its 175th anniversary and the Black Student Union felt it was important to highlight the accomplishments and achievements of black students and educators within our school.

Why do you think this theme is important?

When most people think of Black History, they think of the same historical figures and events, but it’s important to be reminded that black history happens every day. What better way to broaden people’s views on black history than to highlight what has happened at our own school!

Working on this, and learning the things that you learned, how did it impact you personally?

Learning more about Black history at SAA was extremely empowering. It deepened our appreciation for those who came before us and encouraged us to be brave and courageous. Being the first black graduate, first Miss St. Agnes, SGA President, or the first black teacher most likely came with its challenges and obstacles, but these women (and men) persevered.

What do you hope your fellow students take away from your presentation?

We hope students have a greater understanding of “local” black history at St. Agnes and recognize that black history is not separate from St. Agnes, but a part of it.

What other Black History Month activities do you have planned?

In addition to our presentation during assembly, BSU will “take over” the student life Instagram to spotlight black-owned businesses. Through these posts, we hope to draw attention, uplift black entrepreneurs, and encourage students and staff to support them.

What would you like readers to know about the BSU at SAA?

The Black Student Union is a community for black students where relationships are formed, girls are supported, and we all can grow and strengthen our identity among our peers. The Black Student Union is not just for black students, it’s also for the entire SAA-SDS community to learn, understand, and appreciate.
