Jr. High Global Adventure

20 Oct, 2019

Thanks to an experiential global learning program, 7thgraders at St. Agnes-St. Dominic are better able to understand the daily challenges that billions of people worldwide struggle with each day. The students recently experienced a global adventure they will not soon forget at Lone Oaks Farm, an extension of the University of Tennessee

Upon their arrival at Lone Oaks, students were separated into "tribes," each with economic disparity. The "wealthier" tribe slept on mattresses in a comfy hay trailer, while the least-fortunate tribe struggled on the dirty wooden floor of an open-air trailer. The students experienced many challenges in order to get the supplies they needed for their meals, cooking on open fires and the long night outdoors. They were even invaded by a neighboring country, complete with cannon fire and marching.

“Being globally competent, understanding other cultures and traditions, and learning to communicate effectively with people living in different parts of the world prepares our students for a future with international companies and organization in our globalized world,” said 7thgrade religion teacher Julia Schuster.

“The program Lone Oaks designed especially for St. Agnes-St. Dominic furthered our social justice and geography curricula and offered our students a striking glimpse of life in our world," Mrs. Schuster added.

In preparation for the overnight trip to Lone Oaks students learned about Catholic Social Teachings and the UN Sustainable Development Goals in their religion and geography classes.

Lone Oaks Farm is owned by the University of Tennessee and offers many Agricultural, STEM, Global, Trap shooting, conservation activities and Scout camps to children of all ages.
