Distance Learning Center
Our Veritas Distance Learning Center (DLC) has transcended the traditional classroom experience at St. Agnes Academy - St. Dominic School by providing opportunities for global connectivity. Opening in the fall of 2008, the Distance Learning Center has allowed us to teach and learn “beyond our walls.” Students and teachers from all grade levels and disciplines can experience learning through a different lens by real-time connections with people across the globe.
Our young children visit the DLC frequently throughout the school year, especially enjoying the different holidays as they are celebrated by different cultures. From visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus to adventures “Under the Sea” or with the dinosaurs in “Up Close and Paleo,” this new dimension of learning is exciting and fun.
Across the curriculum, lessons have been expanded to include live interactions with experts from multiple fields, including doctors, scientists, authors, musicians, museum curators, and more. Lessons come alive as students connect their learning through real life problem-solving. Some favorite lesson extenders include learning fractions and percentages from the Baseball Hall of Fame’s “Math Batter Up,” or developing logic and reasoning skills from “Math Mysteries” and “Rollercoaster Physics.” The psychology class learns about operant conditioning through demonstrations and dialogue with the animal trainers at the St. Louis Zoo, and the anatomy and health classes observe in real time a cadaver demonstration from St. Louis University’s Medical Center. Art students have also studied such topics as “Architecture in Art,” and “Exploring Still Life, “ provided by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Besides connecting with content providers, our students can collaborate with students from other parts of the country or world through planned debates, novel discussions, and project collaborations. Every year we look forward to reconnecting with our favorite experiences and forging ahead to all the new possibilities that arise as more schools join us in our global pursuits.
