Congratulations to the St. Agnes Academy Class of 2017. This Class has earned $9 Million in scholarships for academic, athletic, art, leadership and service achievements. They have been accepted to 90 colleges and universities in 27 states from Hawaii to Massachusetts and New York to Texas. They have volunteered almost 9,500 hours of service to the community throughout high school. The Class of 2017 includes talented artists and actresses, scientists, mathematicians, writers and athletes. They have excelled academically and been leaders on our campus.

Congratulations to our 87 shining stars who will graduate this Saturday. The Class of 2017 is the 166th class to graduate from St. Agnes Academy! This talented group of young women earned $9 Million in scholarships and volunteered almost 9,500 hours of service to the community throughout high school. They were accepted at colleges from New York to Hawaii including Notre Dame, Villanova, Georgia Tech, George Washington University, Pepperdine and Savannah College of Art and Design.

St. Agnes Academy-St. Dominic School Jr. High theology teacher, Julia Schuster, is the 2017 recipient of the Albertus Magnus Award. The award, presented annually by the St. Agnes Academy-St. Dominic School Board of Trustees, recognizes an outstanding educator who demonstrates the four pillars of the Dominican charism - Study, Prayer, Community and Service.

The St. Agnes and St. Dominic 8th graders enjoyed a wonderful class trip to Camp Marymount. This annual 8th grade event is one that is filled with community, faith, fun and simplicity. Camp Marymount is 340 acres filled with beautiful land and nature. The students and faculty spent two nights and three days working together on both their emotional and spiritual being and exploring the lay of the land. “The students learned many things, but the most impacting lesson was that teamwork makes the dream work,” said 8th grade teacher Michelle Griggs.

As a Lenten service project, students from 2K through junior high spent the last several weeks collecting food to fill Easter food baskets for families sponsored by Project Outreach. The Sr. Elaine Wicks Project Outreach is an organization founded by Sr. Elaine Wicks, a Franciscan Sister, under the direction of Bishop Dozier in 1975 to meet the needs of the poor of Fayette County. Early in the morning on Holy Thursday, a group of St. Agnes and St. Dominic 7th grade students, along with Mrs. Kirk, assisted Project Outreach in sorting all the food and distributing the baskets to over 250 families in Fayette County.

SAA Delegation Shines at Youth in Government Conference

The St. Agnes Academy Youth in Government Delegation traveled to Nashville to participate in the state Youth in Government Conference this past weekend. SAA was represented by Arabella Hamm SA11, Abby Sellers SA11, Kelsey Sanderson SA11, Bridget Weldon SA10, and Mary Dreyer Smith SA10.

Friday Thank Yous at St. Dominic School

A new tradition takes hold at St. Dominic. Each Friday at 2:50 pm, students and faculty from grades 1-6 gather to offer “Friday Thank Yous.” Instilling a sense of gratitude among the SDS community has been a major focus this year.

“Our time of thanks begins with words of welcome and reminds everyone of the wonderful week of exploration and learning they have experienced,” says Dean Chris Burke. “It is good to go through life with a healthy sense of thankfulness. I believe thankfulness, not guilt, can guide us to become a more compassionate people and community.”

SAA-SDS Students are WordMasters Champions

The St. Agnes Academy-St. Dominic School 8th grade team achieved Highest Honors in the recent WordMasters Challenge™. Wordmasters is a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually. The eighth grade team scored an impressive 191 points out of a possible 200 in the second of three meets this year, placing fifth in the nation.

In celebration of Catholic Schools Week, students at St. Agnes Academy-St. Dominic School dedicated a day to service. Throughout campus, from the Early Childhood Center to the Upper School, students spent part of their day working together to serve the community.

In preparation for their upcoming Church Architecture project, the seventh grade class recently spent a day visiting a variety of churches in Memphis. Each church on the tour was selected for its unique architectural style. Students learned about Norman Gothic architecture at St Peter Church.

State Champs for the 5th Time

The St. Agnes Academy Bowling team captured the 2017 Division 2-AA state title at the tournament in Murfreesboro, defeating Friendship Christian School 17-10. Senior Caroline Conrad was named 2017 Miss Tennessee Bowler of the year, and sophomore Grace Becker was the individual state runner-up.

Students at SAA-SDS began the semester with the annual Blessing of the Doors. In Great Britain and other countries, the custom of the Epiphany blessing and chalking the doors signifies asking God’s blessing on the homes and school and all those who live, work, and visit there.

St. Agnes athletes sign letter of intent to CBU and Notre Dame. St. Agnes Academy seniors Destini Berry and Abby Heck signed letters of intent to continue their athletic careers in volleyball and golf at the collegiate level.

The Senior Kindergarten classes study the saints throughout the school year. In honor of the month of November and All Saints Day students researched their patron saints and wrote a short paragraph that they read to the lower school students.

On Thursday, SAA-SDS fifth and sixth graders attended Junior Achievement’s BizTown, an all-day experience in a fully interactive simulated town facility. This program combines in class learning with their individual projects that foster leadership skills: working collaboratively to solve problems, expressing creativity, and assuming responsibility.

St. Agnes Academy inducted 33 seniors into the National Honor Society. Seniors are selected for inclusion in the Aquinas Chapter of the National Honor Society based upon their academic merit and their demonstrated leadership, character, and commitment to service. To be eligible students must have earned a 3.67 or higher cumulative G.P.A. over six semesters at St. Agnes Academy.

The senior class traveled to the Motherhouse in St. Catherine, Kentucky where they visited with many of the Dominican Sisters, learning about the sisters’ lives and commitment to the Order. The students had hot chocolate with the sisters and attended Morning Prayer. The visit included a tour of the Motherhouse, the farm and Sansbury Care Center, which is a senior care facility for the sisters. President Tom Hood visited with Sr. Marina Gibbons who served as President of St. Agnes Academy-St. Dominic School from 1978 to 1994. The group also toured the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown and the Abbey of Gethsemani in Trappist. The trip to the Motherhouse is an annual event for the senior class.

In observance of September 11 all St. Agnes and St. Dominic students began the morning with a prayer service commemorating the day. The Lower School attended Mass, and all SAA Lower School students wore blue uniforms in honor of the first responders.

We are pleased to announce that 100% of the St. Agnes Academy-St. Dominic School faculty and staff Said Yes to the 2016-2017 Annual Fund! The SAA-SDS faculty and staff generously contributed $37,000 to the Annual Fund! The school will now receive an additional $5,000 from an anonymous donor in recognition of achieving 100% participation. This is the fourth straight year that the Annual Fund has been supported by every member of the SAA-SDS faculty and staff reflecting their strong belief in the mission of our school.

It was a beautiful morning at St. Agnes Academy-St. Dominic School as we kicked off the school year with an all school Mass. Fr. Dexter Noblefranca was our celebrant for the Mass of the Holy Spirit, praying for enlightenment for the school year. In a special ceremony lead by Sr. Pat Twohill, Prioress of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, Tom Hood was installed as President of St. Agnes Academy-St. Dominic School, and Chris Burke was installed as Dean of St. Dominic School.
