Dominican Sponsorship
St. Agnes Academy was founded by the Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine, Kentucky in 1851 and they founded St. Dominic School for Boys in 1956. Today, the Sisters continue to sponsor the schools even though they no longer own them. Four members of the Board of Trustees are Dominican Sisters including the president of the Governing Board of St.Catharine and although they no longer teach at the schools or participate in the day to day running of the schools they assist the administration uphold the Dominican charism and spirit to praise, to bless and to preach. Our motto is the traditional motto of Dominicans everywhere: Veritas. The Sisters keep the school updated on the activities in which they want students and faculty to participate and they monitor the spiritual and religious life of the schools to assure that we are true to our Dominican heritage. An added strength is the fact that our chaplains are the Dominican Friars at St. Peter Church.

We maintain a strong connection with the Sisters. The senior class makes an annual trip to the St. Catharine Motherhouse so that students can meet the Sisters who live there and learn about the history of the congregation first hand. Several Sisters live in Memphis and are present to our students and faculty whenever we call on them. Sister JoAnn Mascari, O.P. is the director of the Dominican Spirituality Center and has become a resource to the campus in many other ways.

The Four Pillars
The Four Pillars of Dominican Life are Prayer, Community, Study and Service or Preaching. At St. Agnes and St. Dominic, we provide our students with opportunities to pray daily in all classes, at regularly scheduled liturgies, at daily Communion Service, at special prayer services to celebrate the feast days of saints, and through services such as the Living Rosary, May Processions, and Stations of the Cross. We build community in our classrooms, on our sports teams, in our student organizations and through social events sponsored by the school. Our students study and excel in their classrooms with the goal of becoming people who will be able to influence the world for good through their love of knowledge. Service to others is a hallmark of our students at St. Agnes and St. Dominic. Our students learn at an early age that they have a responsibility to build the Kingdom of God through their service to others and that in fulfilling their responsibility they will spread the Truth as St. Dominic did.

The Dominican Spirituality Center
The Dominican Spirituality Center was founded to provide a place where Dominican spirituality can be promoted. The Mission Statement states: In the spirit of St. Dominic who responded to the needs of his time, the Dominican spirituality Center is founded on the four pillars of Dominican life: prayer, study, community and preaching. The purpose of the Center is based on these pillars and is fourfold: To provide a place where community will be developed in an atmosphere of support, acceptance, encouragement and love among all individuals; a place where study will lead to holiness and wisdom; a place where prayer opportunities will be varied and rich, a place where preaching will be carried out in word and in service to others. The Center will be devoted to seeking truth in all things.

Among the programs offered at the Center at this time is an ongoing program on Contemplative Prayer, a monthly prayer group for faculty and staff, meetings of the Dominican Associates and Sisters, and scripture study that are offered during Advent and Lent.
